Born in 1991, Joanna Mirabel is a French artist of Caribbean and Guyanese origin who graduated from the École des Beaux Arts in Paris. Through her work as a painter, the artist develops a pictorial approach that oscillates between abstraction, expressionism and realism. The peaceful scenes assemble different stories and memories by composing images where spaces interpenetrate, perspectives are distorted and entangled.
Lush vegetation is juxtaposed with scattered and partially depicted objects to portray the contradictions and complexity inherent in existence caught between different cultures. Inspired by the concept of creolization developed by Édouard Glissant, her work is composed of pictorial forms that always seem to be in motion and in which the characters – herself or her loved ones – find themselves swept up in this constantly changing environment.
