“Hope is a good thing, and good things never die” – an African proverb
Thandiwe Muriu (b.1990) is a fine art photographer born and raised in Nairobi, Kenya. As a female artist operating in a previously male-dominated field, she is passionate about celebrating and empowering her fellow women.
Her series titled “Universal Truths” is a capsule series which touches on experiences that connect us all as human beings and are universally true no matter what culture, no matter what country and no matter what season of life you are in. In this series the artist explores four different themes: Brotherhood as symbolic of the closeness shared by siblings or shared in a deep, rich friendship. Ascension which acknowledges the fact that every human holds ambition and the hope for growth. Unity which looks at the power of community, such as the Kenyan spirit where neighbor helps neighbor; or even that our pain can unite us as human beings. Finally, Discord which is a visual representation of the bond that remains despite unrest or the lack of harmony which ties two people together- especially where romantic love is involved.
